The National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland, houses well over one hundred scientific papers on the healing powers of garlic. This amazing food has the ability to thin blood, reducing the possibility of blood clots forming. Garlic raises the levels of good cholesterol in the body, while lowering the bad cholesterol. It prevents the formation of plaque and fatty deposits inside the arteries. Garlic even has the ability to lower blood pressure.
Garlic will grow just about anywhere, but the weather conditions in Northeast Georgia are just about perfect for this member of the lily family. Garlic must have so many weeks of very cold temperatures to trigger the growing process. Buy bulbs for planting at any of the fine garden nurseries in, around, above, and below, Atlanta. December and January are the best months to plant garlic in this area.
The wild garlic found growing in open fields, meadows, and in your lawn, are just as beneficial as the garlic you plant in the garden. Garlic is also an infection fighter. A compound found in garlic, called allicin is as effective as a strong antibiotic. This germ fighter can kill botulism, pneumonia, typhoid, staph, tuberculosis, and dysentery. The list of germs destroyed by garlic includes more than 70 others. Cooking the garlic destroys the allicin, so rub your wooden salad bowl with fresh garlic and chop a clove or two to add to the salad.
A garlic extract kills the virus that causes colds, one of the flu viruses, the herpes virus that causes fever blisters, and genital herpes. Certain cancers are prohibited from growing by garlics special chemical makeup. Alliinase, Allin, and Allicin, are the chemicals within garlic. These are sulphur compounds which give garlic its healing powers.
To make a natural remedy you can use daily:
- Fill a wide-mouth-quart canning jar with one-half cup of peeled, bruised garlic cloves
- Add one-half cup each of apple cider vinegar and distilled water
- Put the lid on the jar and shake well
- Shake the jar two or three times a day for five days
- Strain the garlic and add 12 ounces of honey
- Store out of direct sunlight
Take a tablespoon of the garlic remedy twice a day, every day. With all the health benefits of garlic, it is a bonus that insects will no longer find your blood desirable. Just remember to rinse with mouthwash after thirty minutes or so, or it may be more than insects you repel.
