Tremont Hen House, located at 6238 Chatham Road, began a major remodel of the store ahead of the opening of a new Hy-Vee just across the street.
Although many believe that the remodel is occurring only because the Hy-Vee is under construction on the north side of 64th Street, store officials say that the improvements have been in the works for some time.
The improvements to the Hen House are focused on a new dining area that will feature a large-screen TV, free wi-fi service and additional natural lighting on the inside of the store. The idea behind the remodel is to create a “third-place,” the concept of which refers to a place where most people spend a significant portion of their time on a regular basis; the first being at home, the second at work and the “third place” being somewhere that is typically focused on social interaction.
Part of the Hen House social experience includes Starbuck’s Coffee, which opens with the store at 6 a.m., serving pastries and a full menu of coffee beverages. Starbuck’s will remain in its convenient location within the store allowing morning patrons to quickly get in and out on their way to work.
Starbuck’s customers will also be able to take their beverages into the newly designed cafe area, which will provide a more comfortable dining experience for customers to enjoy some of the culinary features of the Hen House market, including the Rice Garden (Chinese), Sushi Bar, All-U-Can-Eat Salad Bar and homemade fried chicken. Hen House will also continue to offer several products that are exclusive to their stores, such as Boar’s Head Meats, Mollie B’s food products and Tippin’s Pies and Soups.
The remodel will include new freezers and coolers, and several changes to the floor plan, including the relocation of the liquor department and health and natural section. The improvements are underway with completion scheduled for mid-2011.
The new Hy-Vee in Park Plaza is part of phase I of the redevelopment of the property located in the northwest quadrant of the I-29/64th Street Interchange. Phase I also includes the recently opened CVS Pharmacy, a third lot located north of CVS, and the new section of Chatham Road that was completed last spring. Future phases of the development include the realignment of Prairie View Road that will coincide with the redesign of the highway interchange. Completion of Hy-Vee is expected in June, 2011.
