Yes, we all love to dote on the architecture of San Francisco’s house lined steep streets, engage in deep conversations with local cab drivers, and mingle with the diverse crowds of North Beach until the wee hours of the morning. But when we need a relief from the noise of the cable car breaks what better than to peel off a layer of clothing and take advantage of San Francisco’s best attribute; a great location for weekend getaways.
Jump on the 280 south and enjoy the San Francisco views as you curve in and out of the city and make your way to a great weekend escape just slightly south of San Francisco; Half Moon Bay. Believe it or not Half Moon Bay is a sought out destination from all over the world and lies about 25 minutes south of our beloved city. Exit Road 92 to a road itself that can grab your attention for a day. This small stretch on the way to your destination is filled with markets galore. Grab some fresh fruit, taste local honey, and purchase some plants to liven up your 1bd apt.
Half Moon Bay, originally inhabited by Costanoan Indians, is the oldest settlement in San Mataeo county dating back to the 1840’s. The small coastal city remains very similar to it’s early beginnings, an agricultural town, with fields of flowers, artichokes, brussal sprouts, Christmas trees, pumpkins and other crops. Feeling tingly yet? Get in tune with your inner historical geek as this old farm town prides itself on preserving its history with traces of it’s visible past in many historic buildings downtown.
Find yourself walking the trails along miles of HMB’s deserted state beach with extended views of the pacific, state parks, and scented wild flower fields. Or better yet, don’t walk and saddle up on a horse and prance your way through the sand. Half Moon Bay’s state park also offers excellent trails for hiking, biking, and running; especially excellent for beginner city folk.
Slightly north of HMB is the area’s greatest and terrifying attraction; the ultimate surf spot Mavericks. When I say ultimate I mean XXX zone. Aren’t the ultimate surfer? No problem, touch the surface and enjoy the safety alternative, ultimate tide pooling, also located at this renound hot spot. But don’t forget your binaculors and watch these insanely grand waves come in routinely cresting over 25 ft and reaching up to a whopping 80ft or more.
End the day with blue ocean views sipping out of a beer sampler at Halfmoon Bay Brewery topped off with some fresh grilled calamari that tastes better than the sweet salty ocean air. Bundle up with a nice buzz and walk down the quaint Main Street or find a romantic spot anywhere along the coastline and watch a the rays of colors change as the sun sets. When you are ready to call it an evening retire to a local bed and breakfast or maximize the night and listen to some live jams at Old Princeton Landing. Upon awakening to your morning hunger you can finds local cafés along the Cabrillo hwy but if you are feeling especially ritzy splurge on a fine dining brunch experience at the castelesque Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay with some of the best ocean views on the central coast.
Considering San Francisco’s personal outdoor property is non existent, most of us not having more than a fold out chair on a fire escape coated in rust, fear not and make Half Moon Bay your new adventure back yard. As HMB offers a revitalizing, fun, and active weekend a short drive away.
