Until now, readers have remained in the dark about ‘People’ magazine’s super secret Sexiest Man Alive selection process. On November 17th Ryan Reynolds took home the 2010 Sexiest Man Alive title. That night, in a 25th anniversary television special, ’25 Years of Sexy’, ‘People’ finally revealed how Reynolds and past honorees get chosen.
Kim Kardashian hosted the show and ‘People’s’ Managing Editor, Larry Hackett led the behind-the-scenes coverage of the magazine’s biggest franchise. It turns out, picking Sexiest Man Alive is a top secret brainstorming session among ‘People’s’ editors, that incorporates public feedback. Hackett said, ‘Whose movie did you see? Whose record did you buy? Whose television show did you watch? How are you feeling about this individual? We try to reflect that.’
There have been a myriad of winners, starting with Mel Gibson as the first Sexiest Man Alive in 1985, with 3 two-time winners, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Johnny Depp. Hackett reported John F. Kennedy Jr. was the youngest winner (at 27), and Sean Connery was the oldest (at 59).
Who can forget the comedic campaign former SMAs George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck raised to get Sexiest Man Alive 2007, Matt Damon, elected? Affleck was particularly funny, telling Regis Philbin, ‘Matt’s getting on. It’s a very narrow window. He’s getting a little long in the tooth, so this is probably his last crack at it.’ Damon finally landed the cover in 2007.
A look into the top secret meeting for this year’s selection revealed that Ryan Reynolds was the first suggestion. Other shout outs included James Franco, Jon Hamm and Javier Bardem.
Kardashian’s on the street poll resulted in a dead heat between Ryan Reynolds and Johnny Depp. ‘People’s’ online research ultimately put Reynolds on top.
Hackett said, ‘Ryan Reynolds is the perfect guy for right now. He’s obviously very handsome. He’s funny, self-deprecating. He’s got a great physique. He’s somebody who people will say, wow, I haven’t thought about him or yes, he’s the guy!’
At 34, Reynolds’ long film list includes memorable roles in ‘Just Friends’, ‘Definitely, Maybe,’ ‘X-Men Origins’, and his breakout romantic lead in ‘The Proposal’.
In his on-screen interview, Reynolds joked, ‘How I managed to usurp George Clooney, who, in a word is dreamy. It’s sort of humbling.’
He continued, ‘My body in its natural state is virtually a mirror image of Dick Van Dyke. People have the image that I look like that and work out 365 days a year. It takes about 6 months to get there and it goes away in about 45 minutes.’
Whatever Reynolds does to maintain that body, works. His self-deprecating humor only adds to the package.
Reynolds defined sexy as, ‘I think it’s an inside out thing. I like to think it has something to do with integrity as well – to me, that’s a very sexy quality.’
