“Is photography considered art?”
That is a question that is asked quite often, however doesnt get a direct answer most of the time. many will respond with something to the effect of, “It depends on what the picture is being used for,” or “perhaps some photos can be considered art, if you take a picture of a painting .” does that mean if you took a picture of a new coffee stain on your carpet for proof your husband didn’t use a lid- it would be in no way a condition of art? How about looking through your high school year book full of photos. Is that considered Art?
Photography has been referred to as a great equalizer or great “democratizer.” photography, that is, makes it possible for almost anyone to reproduce reality, and it also makes it possible for anybody to “commission” a self-portrait or portrait of their family. The role of Photography as a medium can definitely enhance the aerage persons connection to the visual arts. In all honesty, ANYONE can take a photograph- even by your baby cousin by accident, no doubt. With that last statement, it is obvious that a photograph records without having to paint it.
A Photographer chooses a media, theme of what to shoot, attire, genre, etc. It takes planning, along with a perfect execution in order to achieve that perfect image. in photography you are recording light and color. A photo can capture the movement of a fish in the water at the Henry Doorley Zoo, stillness of Zorinskey Lake after the boats go in for the evening, brightness of the sunrays refelcting off your brand new car, darkness of an early fall evening, memories of family get togethers , conversations about what to name the new baby on the way, or feelings of unesainess on your childs first day of school.
just because these common events arent necessarily painted on a canvas, doesnt rule out the fact that they are forever painted in your minds. A photo helps capure this, and provides an aesthetic relationship for the viewer, no doubt. attached below are perfect examples of why photography could be considered art.
A Photograher-whether it be Ansel Adams or some soccer mom in Omaha, searches and sees what is important in things. A Photo radiates intelect and passion for what is beautiful, harmonious, universal, and worth recording. The best part in all intirety is the simple fact that YOU decide where you want your focus.
