Music and Poetry Night is an open mic held every third Thursday of the month. Each month, Music and Poetry Night showcases all forms of talent from singing, dancing, and different genres of poetry.
Music and Poetry Night’s goal is to feature people who are taking their talent to the next level, but to also keep the mic hot for the novice who does what they do simply for the love of the art! The audience consists of people of all ages and can change from month to month from a family crowd to a bunch of high school or college students coming out to support a friend’s performance.
“We want to recreate the fill of families sitting in their front room enjoying each other’s talents. We encourage a positive environment so that it helps people gain the strength to perform in front of an audience, because we are loving and kind, and just enjoy being entertained!” – Marie St. Clair
November celebrates Parental Involvement Week and Music and Poetry Night features a special event consisting of a Family Talent Show, homework help for the children, and a FREE dinner for the entire family starting at 6:00pm (children must have a parent or guardion in order to have dinner). Program begins at 7:00pm and will end around 9:00pm. Parents let’s get involved, bring your kids out, bring your neighbors kids, and let’s have some fun!
Music and Poetry Night will also feature performances by De’nea and Tacia from Hampton University and Hampton High JV Cheerleaders!

“My love is the arts and promoting local artists! My focus is to show the local community what wonderful artists are here in our area by helping to support the local artists so that they can come into one of our buildings to perform and not get tied down with having to pay for a building or having to buy equipment [in order to promote their works]. We want to offer people in our community an opportunity to see and hear talented artists that might not otherwise be able to pay for such entertainment.” – Marie St. Claire
Marie St. Claire is the Recreation Professional with the city of Hampton , Producer/Director/Playwright for their drama groups: The Inner-tainers Performance Troupe and the Promoter and Coordinator for their Music and Poetry Night and all other shows at West Hampton Community Center.
“I am a playwright and have a drama group for young people and have recently started a group for adults. I love the arts, and they are my focus to change the public’s perception of what can be offered in community centers and other city owned buildings.” – Marie St. Claire
Music and Poetry Night began in 2008 born out of a desire to give local artists a venue to perform and serve the urban community by presenting programs and shows that are free or at a nominal fee.
Marie St. Clair also organized the event, Poetry at the Hamptons on November 5th, which featured a few poets from Music and Poetry Night. Find out more in Poetry at the Hamptons’ review and event announcement!
