In what some are calling a ground-breaking announcement, Pope Benedict XVI has given a cautiously limited approval to condom use — most specifically to prevent the spread of AIDS. However, he still has not approved the use of condoms in cases where conception is at issue.
This from the Independent: “In a groundbreaking move, Pope Benedict XVI said yesterday that the use of condoms can be justified in some cases. He cited as an example male prostitutes seeking to prevent the spread of HIV.
“The Pope said that in these circumstances – where contraception isn’t an issue – condoms are not a moral solution, but they could be justified “in the intention of reducing the risk of infection”.Independent

But ‘papal condoms’ hit the news when an Amsterdam shop planned a 2,000 giveaway in May.
