A friend of this writer has already purchased a .22 cal rifle for his son for Christmas. He is a very responsible gun owner and has already been instructing gun safety with the use of an air rifle. Too many shooting accidents have occurred, and will continue, to occur if gun owners act irresponsible. Training is key and should start at a young age, but it is appropriate at any age and is a continuous process. Not to long ago, this writer handed his .22 cal revolver to his son and did not tell him to check the cylinder for ammo thinking it was empty. His son, however, remember his Dad’s training and flipped open the cylinder and sure enough it was loaded with six rounds of .22 cal magnum rounds. A possible serious accident was prevented because of training. Safety training at home is the first step even before the additional training on the shooting range. Treat every gun as if was loaded.
The friend mentioned above will be taking his son to the Apalachicola Shooting Range located south of the city off of Springhill Road and on Forest Road 305 in Apalachicola National Forest. It is a free public range. It is well kept with overhead coverage and has two sides with approximately 6-8 shooting positions on each side. The left side is for small calibers with a range of 50 meters and the right side is for large calibers with a 300 meter range. The two sides are separated by a cider block wall. The range is open from dawn to dusk, but closed on Monday and Friday mornings for maintenance. It is also closed every fourth Saturday for hunter safety classes. There is no Range Safety Officer present so every shooter must comply with 13 rules clearly posted on a large sign at the entrance. The range is ideal for my friend to take his son and great for father (or daughter) bonding and certainly a day of fun on the range. For more info on the range log on to MyFWC.com
A view of the photographs on the left of this article gives the reader some idea of the writer’s passion for firearms and reloading. A favorite rifle is the M1 Garand that brings back many fond memories of his military career – no AR in days past. The Sarah Palin look alike is his daughter who loves the competiviness of target shooting – and she is very good at it. The bullet board depicts most of the calibers that the family reloads on a weekly basis. The last photo is a target taken from the range with a clear warning of our 2nd Amendment right for responsible gun ownership. Soon a new indoor range will be available in Tallahassee and for an update on opening day log on to tallahasseeindoorshootingrange.com Stay safe and on target.
