Back in 2008 acclaimed writer Mark Millar (‘Wanted’, ‘The Ultimates’) and artist John Romita Jr. ( ‘Daredevil: Man Without Fear’, ‘The Sentry’) introduced comic book readers to a whole new kind of superhero with ‘Kick-Ass’; a creator owned series that was published under Marvel Comics’ Icon imprint. ‘Kick-Ass’ is the story of Dave Lizewski, an average teenager who wakes up one day and decides to become a real life superhero; publicizing himself on the internet via social networking sites in an attempt to inspire others to stand up for what is right. The eight issue limited series became an instant hit amongst comic book readers, selling out it’s first few printings and spawning a film adaptation which was released in April 2010. Needless to say, the series has been considered a great success amongst independent comics, and the fans have been asking for a sequel for months; thankfully the wait is over as ‘Kick-Ass 2’ issue #1 hit stands this past week on October 20th.
So how does this new series fare against its predecessor? If this first issue is any insinuation, this series will be just as good, if not better, than the original series. Picking up a few months after the events of the first book, ‘Kick-Ass 2’ pulls no punches and gives fans exactly what they want from page one with the return of Kick-Ass and fan favorite character Hit-Girl. After the events of the last book, it’s nice to see the two of them back in action as they settle into the changes going on in their lives after taking down a major mob boss.
Millar’s writing is superb, as always; although that is to be expected. Millar is generally considered to be a crowd pleasing writer. The story set into motion gives readers a hint at things to come without giving away the entire story all at once; but make no mistake you will be hooked on this series by the end of the first issue. Romita Jr.‘s artwork makes readers feel right at home in this universe he and Millar have created. His costume designs for some of the new characters are just fantastic; standing out on their own as original designs while still paying homage to some of the classic superheroes people know and love.
If you’ve never read the first series, make sure you read it before reading this book; even if you saw the movie adaptation. The original series and the movie have fairly different stories as far as what happens during the climax; making this sequel to the comic series a very confusing read to people who have only seen the movie. The first series is considered one of the best comic books released in the past decade, and it cannot be stressed enough how much you really need to read it before reading this new one.
Also, it should be noted that this series is in no way meant for children. ‘Kick-Ass 2’ is a graphically violent series with alot of rough language throughout. Treat it like a rated R movie, because the contents are on par with exactly that.
If you like comics that are filled to the brim with action, comedy and more violence than you can shake a night-stick at, ‘Kick-Ass 2’ is for you. So far it is a more than worthy successor to the first series, and can only stand to get better as it continues.
