“Thanksgiving Day at Our House: Thanksgiving Poems for the Very Young” by Nancy White Carlstrom and R.W. Alley is a wonderful addition to any family Thanksgiving Day tradition. This collection of poems covers many events surround or connected to the Thanksgiving Day holiday. From school day before the holiday to good night prayers there are a variety of poems for each topic.
While “Thanksgiving Day at Our House: Thanksgiving Poems for the Very Young” includes some of the history of the holiday this children’s poetry book is not just a history book. Told from a child’s view the poems are not only in different rhyming formats but different attitudes such as a serious “Prayer for Others” is paired with “Thank You God for Bugs,” one shows we need to understand and remember that not everyone is as blessed as we are and the other a reminder we should be thankful for the little things as well as the big things.
The darling illustrations are entertaining for even the adults in the family with costumes falling off and the birds outside the window dressed in Indian headdresses are only a few in the book as the child goes through the Thanksgiving activities including cleaning the yard, fixing the feast, and enjoying stories from Grandma.
I loved the ‘stand alone’ poems and think what a great new tradition for Thanksgiving of sharing a poem a day starting a few weeks before the holiday and also the fact that the theme of prayer recurs throughout the book. “Thanksgiving Day at Our House: Thanksgiving Poems for the Very Young” gets a thumbs up from me.
