We’re all guilty of indulging and, in some cases, gorging ourselves with holiday treats and boundless food at gatherings. It seems engrained in our brains that we slip into “plan on stuffing yourself silly and workout later” mode when that holiday spread is right in front of us. Instead of waiting for 2011 to roll around, why not try out the climbing gyms around the Salt Lake valley to add a little bit of zest to your workout routine?
Some of us get stuck in a routine that we can’t seem to break ourselves out of. If you’ve read up on different fitness magazines or articles, you may’ve noticed that several of them mention that in order for us to have an effective workout, we have to add variety so our bodies don’t plateau. So in the middle of doing weights, cardio, and your plyometrics, add climbing to your regiment as it has many benefits when it comes to conditioning and strengthening different muscles in your body.
There are a few climbing gyms you can choose from in the Salt Lake valley that provide a choice variety of climbing walls and bouldering. These climbing gyms also have an area for weight training and cardio and some have Yoga and Pilates classes.
ROCKREATION, located in the Millcreek area on 2074 East 3900 South, has over 7,500 square feet of sculpted climbing terrain which includes both top rope and lead climbing routes. Along with the walls are the bouldering areas for those that prefer to brush up on their bouldering skills.
The Front Climbing Club, on 1450 South 400 West, has 10,000 square feet of premier indoor rock climbing and bouldering. Their facility has a penthouse training room, showers and lockers with towel service, Yoga and Pilates, a club room with ping-pong and foosball and other posh play areas for the climbers.
Momentum Indoor Climbing, located at 220 West 10600 South in Sandy, has 20,000 square feet of climbing that includes top rope, lead climbing and crack climbing. The separate bouldering area has over 200+ bouldering problems. You’re bound to find a climb that will suit you in this gigantic facility. They also provide Yoga and Pilates classes as well as a separate area with weights and cardio equipment. Momentum has a monthly $5 late night from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. which is for anyone, not just members.
Daily passes are available at each of these remarkable climbing facilities, so you can test the waters before making a final decision to become a member. With the holidays around the corner, there are punch passes and weekly passes available at certain facilities.
Rock Climbing is booming and a great sport to get involved in. It’ll definitely burn off those extra calories you’ve packed over the holiday season especially after you’ve polished up that dyno and gotten over the cruxes on each of the climbs. You’ll work muscles out that you didn’t even know you had! It’ll definitely give you a good physical and mental challenge as you set a goal to conquer the next climb.
