Pakistani Christian woman sentenced to death for refusing to renounce Christianity
According to the teachings of the Catholic Church, a martyr for The Faith is automatically declared Blessed by virtue of the martyrdom itself. The next canonical step for the Blessed Martyr is to officially be declared a Saint.
CatholicCulture.org is reporting that Asia Bibi has been sentenced to death for blaspheming the prophet Mohammed after she refused to convert to Islam.
While working the fields, Bibi was verbally accosted by Pakistani moslem women who referred to her as an infidel and then urged her to convert to islam. Bibi refused and referred to Christianity as the only true religion.
Moslem men working nearby gathered then physically attacked Bibi, who then fled to her home.
The mob followed her home, drug her out of her home and beat her, then proceeded to torture her children. In the meantime, someone informed Pakistani police of the attack on the Bibi family.
Police then arrested Bibi on blasphemy charges. Following a lengthy trial, she has been sentenced to death.
In the past two months, five other Pakistani Christians have been falsely accused of blasphemy, according to Peter Jacob, executive secretary of the Pakistani Catholic Bishops’ National Commission for Justice and Peace.
