School board shooting update: Ginger Littleton purse sells on eBay for $13,100
The handbag used by Ginger Littleton to attempt to fight off gunman Clay Duke sold on eBay late on Wednesday afternoon for $13,100. Littleton plans to donate the proceeds to charity. A total of 78 bids were placed on the purse. The New England handbag company, Brahmin, agreed to match the $13,100 sale, so Littleton will be able to give $26,200 to charity.
“That’s just amazing,” Littleton told the Walton Sun newspaper. “I am thrilled to death that the purse will have another life and will do some good in the community.”
WJHG-TV in Panama City Beach, Florida, organized the auction.
eBay had taken the purse off its site but put it back on. The first listing apparently violated the terms of a charitable sale.
An eBay spokesman told the foamcage.com on Monday: “eBay worked with the seller to make sure that the listing was in compliance with our policies and the item is now back up on the site.”
Ginger Littleton used the purse to hit Clay Duke before the Panama City, Florida school board shooting last week.
The eBay posting said: “This is the purse used by school board member Ginger Littleton to try to disarm the shooter during the Bay County, Florida School Board Meeting December 14, 2010.
“It is being auctioned with no reserve. A letter of authenticity will be provided to the winning bidder.
“Don’t miss your chance to own a piece of Florida History!”
The dramatic video of the shooting was viewed by millions last week. The full video is here. It shows Clay Duke being shot by a security officer. Viewer discretion advised. The raw video was posted on YouTube and has been viewed online by more than 600,000 people. An edited version of the video from AP is on the left. It shows the sequence when Ginger Littleton heroically tried to stop Clay Duke.
Littleton has relisted her fake crocodile for sale on eBay with proceeds benefiting charity. The proceeds go to “Salvage Santa,” which is a charity run by the school district’s security chief, Mike Jones. Jones shot and wounded Duke, who in turn shot and killed himself as he lay wounded on the floor. Previously, eBay said that the sale did not meet its guidelines for charity sales.
Littleton inherited the purse from her 89-year-old mother-in-law and she hopes that it will eventually be able to help more people with the money after it’s been sold.
When Duke first took over the school board meeting, he ordered Littleton, who was the only woman on the board, out of the room. She was allowed to go along with a female employee. But Littleton, 59, returned and tried to stop Duke, 57, by hitting him with her handbag. When the attempt failed, Duke didn’t shoot her but ordered her out of the room again. He held the rest of the school board hostage before being shot.
Duke said he was unhappy with his wife being fired by the school district His wife said that he was an expert marksman and that if he had really wanted to hit anyone he would have.
The sale of the purse ended at 5:54 p.m. PST on Wednesday, December 22.
