It was a huge night for Sergio Martinez earlier this evening as a single left hook nearly decapitated Paul Williams in the 2nd round of their long awaited rematch at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
A hotly contested first round seemed to set the stage for yet another war but Martinez used controlled aggression to time Williams’ punches, connecting with a brutal left to the head that knocked Williams completely out.
“The Punisher” fell flat on his face and was counted out, giving Martinez his second major win of 2010 – the other being a dominating and title-winning effort over Kelly Pavlik.
“We had it prepared…it was the product of a lot of work..we worked very hard,” said Martinez after the fight in what will likely seal his first Fighter of the Year honors.
“What changed was that I started to attack but I was always waiting for his mistakes. He was coming in too open and he left me a lot of room to punch,” he added.
Asked about who he’d like to face next, Martinez simply stated that he would like to take a rest then wait for offers to come in before making any decisions.
A still stunned Williams later said, “He just caught me with one that I didn’t see.”
