This drink is widely believed to be invented by T.G.I. Friday’s, but this is not true. They themselves do not claim they invented the drink and they do not even claim that it was on their menu at any point in time. Here is an early printing of this drink:
Scenes: the Big Idea this Summer is Escape – Jun 29, 1987 – Page 42 by New York Magazine – Vol. 20, No. 26
“”Sex on the Beach” is not a suggestion, just a drink on the menu.”
A reprint of this article appears later the same year in New York Magazine. This drink was named during the era of naming drinks after terms generally associated with sex. Although, it was not the first of it’s era, it certainly was one of the earliest. This trend arguably continues even today.
It is difficult to determine where this drink originates, it is clear it origins are near a “beach” somewhere, but beyond that there are not many indicators that suggest much else. This drink was printed nationally within two years of one of the earliest references, but it is undetermined where exactly it orignates. Here are some early references of this drink in locations near beaches:
Tampa Bay Magazine – Jan-Feb 1989 – Page 32
“Now drinks have more erotic sounding names like Sex-on-the-beach and Screaming Woo-woos. The concern for health and fitness has encouraged drinkers to switch from hard liquors and filling beers to wine spritzers, and light beers”
California: Volume 15, Issues 1-4 in 1990
“One of the drinks is called Sex on the Beach, which is vodka, peach schnapps and orange and cranberry juice, so that you can have a lot of fun asking your dinner companions if they would like a little Sex on the Beach”
This last reference was the long running joke behind the drink and it might even be the culprit of the drinks name. That is only speculation and there is no hard evidence supporting this. Given it’s national notoriety within such a short time frame it is possible this drink might have been printed on the back of the label of Peach Schnapps. Again, this is only speculation and accurate assumptions based on factual historical published data. It is undetermined where exactly this drink derived from. It is determined this drink is a play off it’s proprietor the Silk Panties.
This drink dates between 1986 – 1987 and contained at least as of then:
Shake These Ingredients:
Vodka (Absolut was introduced to this drink as early as 2003)
