Dj Kid Capri famous for his spins on Def Jam Comedy Show created by Russell Simmons chops it up with Skye of “The Skye Report.” The bronx native who started spinning records at 8 yrs old speaks out about his career as a world class DJ and the creation of the hit reality series,”Masters of the Mix”.
El Cerrito resident John Costen and Director of Marketing for M1 Promos says,”DJ Kid Capri has been holding it down for awhile he’s taken the role of a DJ to a whole…nother level with his new TV Show.”
The Master of the Mix reality series is the poiniant search to crown the best DJ in the world. The winner gets $20,000 dollars and a signature bottle of Smirnoff as a take home prize. This is in addition giving the winner the bragging rights to say “Their the hottest DJ on the planet.”
So what makes a great DJ? Is it timing? Is it rhythmn or is it a sound musical ear that can randomly pick music with ease to hype up any event. Does a DJ simply move the crowd or are they the masters of ceremonies that controll the ebb and flow of the evening.
Oakland resident DJ Roxwell of a New Day and Time Entertainment says a DJ is the vehicle that’s opens the door for new atists.
DJ Roxwell states,”The DJ is the number point of contact, he gets the people up and dancing… the music has to get into the hands of the DJ without the DJ their would be no new artists.”
Masters of the Mix has picked the cream of the crop when they describe the seven finalists.
Kid Capri states,”It’s a ground breaking show about the evolution of the DJ’s and that’s 7 DJ’s and 8 episodes…and it doesn’t matter how good they are they still have to compete.” The show takes to DJ’s to different cities that include California, Las Vegas, Philly, New York, Miami and london.
Capri continues,”They Dj’s all have a following they are not no nobody DJ’s and it was definetly interesting to do that because they are all professionals in their own ranks.”
Capri admits he wasn’t part of the selection process. According to Capri, “The people that produced the show picked… I didn’t even want that part of the job because I know DJ’s around the world and I would’ve had to deal with the fact of picking this one or picking that one.”
The selection process was cumbersome but Capri feels confident about the DJ’s that finally did get picked. The 7 dj’s for the series include DJ Jazzy Joyce, DJ Mars, DJ Rap, Dj Revolution, DJ Scratch and Dj Vikter Duplaix.
Capri states,”My job was to make sure everything was judged precisely that it wasn’t judged by favoritism because like I say all the time Scratch is like my brother but if he didn’t bring the noise he’d has lost just like anyone else.”
The season finale narrowed the DJ pool down to Vikter Duplaix and DJ Scratch. The
Kid Capri rose to fame spinning at Studio 54 but he gained national attention as the DJ for Def Comedy Jam. Executive produced by Russell Simmons, Def Comedy Jam aired from July 1st 1992 to Jan 1st 1997. The hit show opened the comedy doors to stars such as Martin Lawrence, Mike Epps the late Bernie Mac, Chris Tucker and Cedric the entertainer to name a few.
Hip Hop producer and rap artist Traxamillion states,”Kid Capri is a one of the true innovators of the game.. he’s taken the game to another level.” According to Traxamillion it would excite him to hear capri’s thunderous voice echoing. ” DJ Kid Capri” at the top of the show.
