Beginning today Solvang, “The Danish Capital of American” transforms into a Northern European Style Christmas Village for the annual Julefest celebration, which continues through January 7, 2011. This year’s theme is “Wrap It Up – Countdown to Solvang’s Centennial”. During the celebration Solvang with be in holiday mode, decked out with the twinkle of sparkling lights and caroling around the Village.
The opening of this celebration starts with holiday open houses today November 19th at Santa Ynez Valley Hardware with refreshments and entertainment from 6 – 8 PM. Continuing on Saturday, November 21st with the The Book Loft where there will be food, book signings, music and specials from 9 AM – 9 PM, The Jule Hus open from 10 AM – 4 PM, which is Solvang’s Christmas House and will have refreshments and door prizes, and Solvang Village Folk Dancers Perform from 1 PM – 3 PM at the intersection of Copenhagen & Alisal Rd.
Throughout the celebration and the month of December many of the 150 one of a kind specialty shops will have special open houses. Make sure to stop by Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery anytime during December to see the Holiday Gingerbread House. Danish Baker Bent Olsen creates a 10 foot tall gingerbread houose using approximately 250 lbs. of gingerbread dough, 150 lbs. of powdered sugar and 3 gallons of egg whites.
Some of the highlighted festivities will be the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony held in Solvang Park on December 3, 2010 starting at 5 PM where one can enjoy free live entertainment with ballerinas, bands, caroling and the arrival of Santa Claus to Solvang. The annual Julefest Parade takes place on December 4th and is showcased with Danish dancers, musical groups, vintage vehicles, horses, carriages, etc. There will be free concerts at Solvang Park throughout December at the Solvang Park Gazebo.
The celebration ends with the Solvang’s annual Christmas Tree Burn. Starting at 6 PM on January 7th in the fields of Old Mission Santa Ines, Santa Barbara County Firefighters supervise one of the largest safety demonstrations. Area residents are invited to bring their Christmas trees to the burn pile and than join in this spectacular ignite, which brings in the New Year and the beginning of Solvang’s Centennial Celebration Year.
2011 marks the 100-year anniversary of this charming village so stayed tuned to the special upcoming events that will take place throughout the coming year.
