With a couple of weeks to go before Christmas, we have a few club dates to report for tonight and tomorrow night. Most of the weekend’s events will find your favorite musicians playing in their usual haunts, but there are a few surprises. When you are tired of fighting the crowds at the malls, stop by one of the venues listed below, relax, and take in some good, local music.
Tonight and tomorrow will find The Ben Zurier Trio at the Stanford Grill in Columbia. This trio of accomplished local musicians consists of Ben Zurier on drums, Savino Palumbo on keys, and Alex Weber on bass. Also appearing will be some Towson University jazz students. The music starts at 6PM, and lasts until 10. The Stanford Grill is located at 8900 Stanford Blvd., right off of Dobbin Road.
If you are a local musician with nothing lined up for tonight, head out to Chazz at 9022 Church Lane in Randallstown. Pianist Derrick Amin invites sit-ins to join him for his set beginning at 8PM. Space is limited, so we recommend arriving early.
Cat’s Eye Pub in Fells Point is featuring Old Man Brown tonight. No one is going to mistake Old Man Brown for a jazz group, but they can bring some searing blues riffs to the stage that is well worth experiencing. While there is no doubting the influence of blues on the group, keyboardist/composer Adam Scott-Wakefield incorporates an interesting mix of jazz rhythms into his songs. Wakefield also handles vocals for the group. On one song, “Seek My Arms,” guitarist Marshall Chapman lays down some great covering riffs behind Wakefield’s energizing vocals. If you get a chance tonight, try to catch Old Man Brown.
Another blues band will headline the Cats Eye tomorrow evening. The Roger Girke Band is straight up electric blues. There is nothing pretentious about the band; they are who they are, and make no attempt to be anyone else, or cross genres. If straight ahead blues and an electrifying performance are what you crave, make your way down to Fells Point tomorrow night.
Stepping back into jazz, you can check out The Tom Reyes Quartet tomorrow night from 5 to 9 at The Darker Than Blue Cafe located at 3034 Greenmount Avenue. This is in the Waverly section of the city, about three blocks south of 33rd. Street.
The Caton Castle at 20 S. Caton Avenue will present The Gabrielle Murphy Quartet beginning at 6PM and lasting until 10. The group features Gabrielle Murphy on alto sax, John Lamkin III on drums, Blake Meister on bass, and Kevin Clark handling piano and guitar.
The Dave Janesh Trio will be at Joe Squared Pizza tomorrow night from 7 to 9 PM. Joe Squared is located at 133 W. North Ave, near St. Paul Street.
That covers tonight and tomorrow. Check back tomorrow for jazz dates in the area for Sunday, and the coming week.
