Spiritualism is flourishing in Cincinnati. Spiritualism is the science, philosophy and religion of continuous life, based upon the demonstrated fact of communication by means of mediumship, between this and the spirit world.
A medium is an individual who is sensitive to the vibrations from the spirit world, and who can communicate with departed loved ones and spirit guides to the congregation at a Spiritualist church. It takes more than natural ability to do this work. Mediums undergo years of training to be able to give consistent and accurate messages from Spirit. It also requires the discipline to meditate every day in order to keep personal vibrations high enough to be able to communicate with spirit. In addition, we must constantly educate ourselves in various spiritual disciplines, even those that are different than what we were raised with.
An example of an internationally-known medium is John Edward. Cincinnati mediums include Rose Vanden Eynden, Christine Sabick, and Joanne Franchina, as well as many others. Most local mediums receive their training at Spiritualist seminaries such as Camp Chesterfield in Indiana, and Lily Dale in New York.
Modern Spiritualism began in 1848 with the advent of the Fox Sisters in Rochester, New York. It became very popular throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries in the US and UK. However, in similar fashion to the medical industry that was in its infancy at the time, Spiritualism became rife with frauds and charlatans. Individuals such at Harry Houdini exposed many of the fraudulent mediums of his day. Although this activity discredited Spiritualism for a while we need to thank Mr. Houdini for what he did, because today our standards are much higher. We also need to thank the Fox sisters for bringing the phenomena of Spiritualism to the public eye.
Spiritualism is more than garnering messages from the so-called dead. Spiritualism is a dynamic philosophy that embraces diversity, rational thought and personal responsibility. Platform workers come many walks of life — doctors, lawyers, housewives, factory workers, nurses, teachers and ordained ministers. Any sincere spiritual aspirant can become a medium if they are willing to spend the time to train for it.
Anyone in the Greater Cincinnati area interested in experiencing the phenomena of Spiritualism can attend the United Spiritualists of the Christ Light church in Blue Ash. Gifted mediums rove the platform giving messages from spirit to the congregation. The service is free, or on an offertory basis. Services are every Sunday at 10:30 am, and classes throughout the week are also offered. We hope to see you there!
