NCAA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Eastern Michigan’s Cassie Schrock accomplished a milestone this weekend in Honolulu, scoring her 1,000th career point on Friday, Nov. 19. Heading into the opening game vs. Oregon State during the University of Hawaii’s Rainbow Wahine Classic, the senior guard from Wadsworth needed just one point to reach the milestone. She scored her team’s first basket of the game to accomplish the feat and became the school’s 16th member of the 1,000-point club.
A four-year letterwinner at Wadsworth High School, Schrock left as the school’s second-leading scorer with 1,391 career points. The All-Ohio selection, All-Suburban League honoree and Medina County Player of the Year also holds the Grizzlies’ record for most points scored in a game with 39.
Undefeated Vikings, Golden Flashes
The Cleveland State Vikings are off to a fast start in 2010, opening the season with a 3-0 record. Prior to the game vs. Niagara, the 2010 Horizon League Championship and NCAA banner was raised at the Wolstein Center.
Kent State is also undefeated early on, going 2-0 to open the season before traveling to the Great Alaska Shootout which takes place this coming week.
Xavier’s Michelle Matia (Westlake/Magnificat) was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team for the first time in her collegiate career. The junior middle blocker is joined on the First Team by teammate Claire Paszkiewicz, Duquesne’s Liz Homan and Dayton players Lindsay Fletemier, Jessica Yanz, Amanda Cowdrey and Becky Novacek. Earlier this year, Matia was named the A-10’s Player of the Week. In addition, Xavier’s Stephanie Vorherr won her second consecutive A-10 Libero of the Year award.
Xavier is currently hosting the A-10 tournament, and will face Dayton in the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 3 p.m. It will be the third time thetwo teams have faced off against each other in 2010, with Dayton claiming victory in each of the first two contests.
The #3-seed Ohio State women’s soccer team edged #2-seed Virginia 3-2 on Nov. 20 and will now advance to the NCAA quarterfinals. The Buckeyes will host Georgetown on Friday, Nov. 26 in Columbus. Kick-off is slated for 5 p.m.
The NCAA Championship game will be played on Dec. 5 in Cary, N.C. Kick-off is set for 12 noon.
