Most Americans will celebrate Thanksgiving next week, and many cooks have no idea how to cook a turkey. Thousands will call the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line and ask, How long does it take to thaw a turkey? Is it safe to cook a stuffed turkey? How do I deep fry a turkey, and is it safe? Thousands of people call the Butterball Hotline every year and ask these questions.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA) encourages calls. Turkey questions and answers are just a phone call away. The USDA meat and poultry hotline is 1-888-MPHOTLINE; 1-888-674-6854. The hotline operates Monday through Friday, 10:00am to 4:00pm ET, and operates on Thanksgiving Day from 8:00am to 2:00pm ET. Cooks can also ask the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day, at AskKaren.gov.

- How long does it take to thaw a turkey?
- Defrosting a turkey
- Brining a turkey
- Roasting a turkey
- How to deep fry a turkey
There’s no question the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line hasn’t heard before, they’ve probably heard it all. Call the Butterball Turkey-Talk Line at 1-800-288-8372.
How Much Turkey Do You Need? For fresh or frozen turkeys, figure on 1 pound of turkey per person. If you want leftovers, add a few extra pounds to the total.
How To Roast a Turkey – Don’t forget to remove the giblets, neck and liver from the turkey cavities before roasting. Don’t throw them away if you want to make your own giblet gravy. For complete directions on roasting and thawing a turkey, please go to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA).
