There were definitely whispers about the potential for last week’s release of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows to unseat The Twilight Saga: Eclipse for its midnight release record or The Twilight Saga: New Moon for its opening day record, but alas it has not happened.
According to NBC, Potter brought in $24 million for its midnight opening, falling third in line for all-time high midnight release behind Eclipse ($30 million) and New Moon ($26.3 million).
Also, Box Office Mojo shows that New Moon still holds the opening day record ($72.7 million), despite the very impressive $61 million Potter brought in on Friday.
It’s been just over a year since New Moon hit theaters and solidified its place in modern movie history. Harry Potter is one of several major films that have been released since then (think Avatar, Alice In Wonderland, etc.), so it’s definitely not a fluke. Eclipse, when setting the new record for midnight release numbers, de-throned one of its own, New Moon, which had previously broken the former record set by The Dark Knight. It should be interesting to see which, if any, film is able to take on these giant feats by these two films in the future.
