First thing you have to decide is what your goals are and then find a Instructor that can help you reach that goal. One important thing to find out is where they learned to teach riding and what experience they have working with horses. Believe it or not there are people who teach riding lessons who don’t ride or know much about horses.
There is a variety of places out there from your back yard hobby farm to the multi-million dollar facilities. Just because one is fancier or cost more it does not mean your getting more for your money.
Some places like a boarding facility will have a large lesson program that has older broke horses and teach a varity of riding styles. These places are great if you want to learn the basics and equitation and for those that just want to get some experience riding. In general the Instructors concentrate on your position on a horse and teach you the basic riding skills. The horses are so custom to doing the same thing that they don’t challenge the rider.
Places that provide lessons and offer horse training are usually specific in a type of training and riding style and challenge the rider. These instructor’s are usually horse trainers so they’re going to be able to tell you how to correct problems and explain how the horse is trained. Some put you on a show horse that is highly trained to perform by the riders weight and a simple touch or cue. New students will have problems at first because they are going to confuse the horse with cuing. So some Instructors even ride along and demonstrate what your working on or use a demo rider. In some cases this helps people learn and understand faster by seeing and watching. This will teach the rider more about how they’re position and what they do effects the horse. This can be a challenge and fustrating at times for a new rider but they learn more.
Instructors are going to have to evaluate where you are at the first lesson and determine what horse is right for you. They also have the job to keep you safe so the second lesson might be diffrent and go better. Its all about what your goals are and selecting the right one for you.
