In a recent CNN documentary, Tiger Woods’ half brother, Earl Woods Jr. spoke out in defense of Tiger, and shared some little known facts about the things that shaped his little brother’s life. (Tiger and his brother are 20 years apart)
In addition to provided an interesting perspective on Tiger’s life, and the kind of person Tiger really is, Earl Jr. also spoke of family ties, and unconditional love.
Earl’s Interview Should Be Viewed in a Positive Light
Most of the media reports on the CNN documentary, Downfall: The Tiger Woods Scandal, put a negative spin on Earl Woods Jr.’s interview.
They gave the impression that Earl Woods Jr. trashed his younger brother, or imply that Tiger Woods abandoned his family, and neither of those things are true.
Other reports erroneously convey that Earl Jr.’s interview with CNN’s T.J. Holmes was for the purpose of grabbing the spotlight for himself, or because he’s trying to contact Tiger Woods to get money.
I totally disagree with all these negative accounts.
To me, Earl Woods Jr. came across as a loving and concerned older brother who’s trying to replace their father Earl, Sr., as the glue that held two blended families together.
Earl Woods Jr., Kevin Woods, and Royce Woods are the children of Tiger’s father by his first wife, Barbara Hart Woods. There is a 14 to 20 year age gap between them, and Tiger Woods.
Barbara and Earl Sr. divorced in 1968. He married Tiger’s mother, Kultida, in 1969. Tiger was born in 1975. Earl Jr. was living with his father and stepmother when Tiger was born.
Earl Jr. also spoke of growing up with Tiger, and the values their father Earl Woods Sr. tried to instill in his daughter and his 3 sons.
Highlights from Earl Woods Jr.’s CNN Interview
Below are some of the highlights from the interview T.J. Holmes did with Earl Woods Jr. for the CNN documentary,Downfall: The Tiger Woods Scandal.
The Last Time Tiger Saw Earl Jr. Kevin, and Royce
Earl Jr. admits that he and Tiger are estranged, but says that rumors about the reasons for the estrangement ( money, family feud) are false.
The last time Earl Jr., Kevin, and Royce saw Tiger, was in May 2006, when the family buried Earl Woods Sr. They all flew to Kansas with Tiger on his private jet to carry their father’s remains.
Earl Jr. says that since then, he’s tried to contact Tiger, but has gotten no response.
Why Earl Jr. Wants to Get in Touch with Tiger Woods
Earl.Jr wants to get in touch with Tiger because the family wants him to know that his brother, Kevin is sick, and is rapidly declining. Kevin has multiple sclerosis, and his health has declined 40% in the past two years.
But Earl.Jr. says:
Kevin doesn’t want this to be a big to-do about his condition.
… there is this issue with trying to get the news to him. And it’s been so difficult. It’s like he doesn’t care, and I kinda feel that he does.
With so many layers of insulation between Tiger and the general public, especially since the infidelity scandal and Tiger’s subsequent divorce, Earl Jr. is reaching out to Tiger in the only other way he knows.
Perhaps his CNN interview will help them reconnect.
And even though Earl Jr. is frustrated , and disappointed that he hasn’t been able to reach Tiger by letter or by phone, he also wants Tiger to know the family still cares about him, despite his recent problems.
We have unconditional love for him, whether he contacts us or not.
Growing up with Tiger
Earl Jr. has warm memories of how Tiger became interested in golf as a toddler, and of how their father Earl Sr. coached young Tiger as his interest grew.
In fact, Earl Jr. fondly remembers making Tigers first golf clubs, himself. When Tiger was just a little boy, 3 years old, Earl Jr., was employed as a tool and die maker at the time. Their father gave Earl Jr. some golf clubs which he took to the shop and reworked, modifying them to accommodate his baby brother’s size.
In response to T.J. Holmes’ question, Earl Jr. said that he, Kevin and Royce never felt like Tiger was getting special treatment — their father was a born instructor. Earl says their dad spent a lot of time in the backyard playing baseball with him, and Kevin, too.
It’s also importantto note that with a 14 – 20 year age gap between them, Tiger’s siblings were teens or young adults when Tiger was born.
Earl Jr. was living with his father and stepmother, Kultida, at the time Tiger was born. Even after Earl. Jr. moved into his own apartment, he would visit his family on weekends.
When Tiger was in college, his sister Royce did Tiger’s laundry and grocery shopping for him. In gratitude, Tiger bought her a house. .
How Tiger Was Affected by Their Father’s Death
Earl Jr. spoke of how deeply Tiger Woods was affected by his father’s death.
What I saw was that — he lost a part of himself.
I think that our father was a part of Tiger so much that, when he passed, Tiger became lost. That he didn’t know how to fill that void.
The Values Earl Woods Sr. Instilled in His Sons
Earl Jr talked about the strong values their father tried to instill in his sons, and feels that bad associations, may have led Tiger astray.
I think that Tiger felt an obligation to make my father proud of him and not get caught up in — the different things that some popular people get caught up inand that he had to live his life walking down a certain path.
Earl Jr. feels that Tiger was affected by hanging around with other celebrities who were living a “playboy lifestyle.”
In Defense of His Brother
Earl Jr. speaks out in defense of his famous brother, saying that the real Tiger Woods is not the one the media portrays. Earl Jr says.
Tiger isn’t arrogant, just very confident of his abilities.
He feels that as a golfer he needs to conduct himself a certain way with people. Some people misinterpret that as aloofness.
Why Earl Woods Jr. is Reaching Out
In view of Tiger’s recent problems (the infidelity scandal, and his subsequent divorce), Earl said the family wanted to give Tiger some time.
Now, with Earl Jr. acting as unofficial spokesman, the family has 4 reasons for reaching out:
- They want Tiger to know about Kevin’s declining health.
- They want people to know the real Tiger Woods – not the Tiger Woods the media portrays.
- They’re concerned about Tiger and want to know how he’s doing.
- Whether he contacts them or not, they want Tiger to know that they still have the same unconditional love for him.
As Earl Jr, says
We ARE family.
The Glue that Holds the Family Together
Tiger hasn’t abandoned his family, as some media reports would have you believe.
The once close-knit siblings simply drifted apart as blended families often do, when family members are on different paths.
There is always one person in the family who acts as the glue that holds the family together.
And when that core person, who acts as the unifying force, dies, families often drift apart. But it doesn’t mean they no longer love each other.
In his attempts to reconnect with Tiger, Earl Woods Jr. is trying to replace his father, Earl Woods Sr., as the glues that holds this once close-knit family together.
For the family’s sake, and for Tiger’s, I hope Earl Jr. succeeds.
Because more than ever, Tiger Woods needs his family now.
