AFC’s favorite fighting couple, Tommie Mathews and Leslie Fine-Wright are set to wed after she accepted his proposal at the Alaska Fighting Championships 77th show.
Tommie popped the question during a scheduled promo with Steven Waalkes for a shot at the light-heavyweight title. Leslie found no hesitation in answering “yes” before adorning her ring. I asked her if she had any idea the proposal was about to happen.
“Holy cow, I had no idea,” she says. “I was shocked! They played it up really good! I’ve never been nervous entering the octagon in the past but for some reason this time was different.”
Tommie addressed his timing by saying, “We’ve been together for a little over a year and a half but I knew the minute I met her that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. Leslie is the most amazing woman I’ve ever met. She’s drop-dead gorgeous and smart as a whip. I’m head over heels in love with her.”
Leslie says he’s the ideal partner for her. “Tommie is perfect in every way. He’s very caring and compassionate and he always tries to do right by everyone he meets!”
I asked Tommie what it’s like being a fighting couple? “It’s scary, exciting, nerve racking, pulse pounding. We are brutally honest with each other and she’s not afraid of anything. Both of us being fighters is one of many things we have in common.”
I also asked him if a fight with Waalkes was legitimately in the works or if the promo was staged to set up his proposal. “For me it was kind of both. I talked with Steven a couple of months ago about a fight with him and he was stoked about the whole idea. It seems nobody had come forward to even challenge him so he was game. I talked with Sarah and she said it would only be fair for me to fight the #1 contender to earn my right for a title-shot and I wouldn’t have it any other way. But yes, this was used to throw Leslie off.”
As for a time-frame he says, “We haven’t set a date yet, but I’m thinking July or August of next year. She has tons of friends and together we know a lot of people. If I had my way it would be at an outdoor AFC Mat-Su Showdown event, in the octagon, married by either Al Medina, Pino Barber or Mike Houston with cage girls as bridesmaids and corner guys as groomsmen.”
Leslie agrees with him, at least about the outdoors part. “Outside for sure. I’m thinking 2012 summer time, something simple and quick so everyone can party! I like the simple yet finer things I guess!”
