When “Humpy” Wheeler decided to build a drag strip across from Charlotte Motor Speedway, everyone knew it wouldn’t be your ordinary quarter-mile. The result: zMAX Dragway, the only four-lane, all-concrete dragstrip in the US, and current home to two NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing events.
The complex, part of the CMS property at 5555 Concord Pkwy. South in Concord, North Carolina, features two grandstands that can hold approximately 30,000 spectators, as well as 40 luxury suites (16 in the starting line tower, 24 above the main grandstand). It hosted its first event in September 2008, the Carolina Nationals, and in 2009 hosted an exhibition match race using all four drag strips. In 2010, the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals were introduced in March.
This year’s two NHRA events are April 14th through 17th (the Four-Wide Nationals) and September 15th through 18th (the O’Reilly Auto Parts Nationals). Tickets for teh second-annual Four-Wide Nationals are on sale now at www.charlottemotorspeedway.com. Four-day adult passes start at $99; individual day passes are also available:
