In the sole middleweight fight of UFC 123, Gerald “The Hurricane” Harris will meet Maiquel Falcão on the main card of UFC 123. Harris, if you may remember, made waves with his devastating slam KO victory over Dave Branch at UFC 116. The slam was so impressive it made the ESPN top 10 plays of the day and Harris has been labelled a future star. Standing in Harris’s path to stardom will be Falcão, who hails from the legendary Chute Box academy in Brazil.
Harris (17-2) was a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter season 7, but did not make his UFC debut until January of this year. His debut was a smash though, as he won “Knockout of the Night” on the UFC Fight Night 20 card and has gone 3-0 in the UFC thus far. Harris is a patient fighter who uses his wrestling to give himself advantageous positions where he can pummel his opponent into oblivion.
Falcão (25-3) has made a living beating up on overmatched Brazilian fighters, but don’t take him lightly. He has excellent striking and is lethal with both his fists and his legs. While he hasn’t faced a wrestler with the strength of Harris yet, I wouldn’t not be surprised one bit if he timed a Harris takedown attempt with a highlight reel knee knockout.
That being said, if Harris gets Falcão on the mat, Falcão will likely be in deep trouble. Fighters out of the Chute Box academy have not been performing that well recently in their UFC debuts, and Falcão could just be the next victim.
I’m going to play it safe and pick Harris.
Prediction: Gerald Harris via unanimous decision
