American ingenuity and free enterprise can lick any problem, including the invasion of privacy by Transportation Security Administration airport full body scanners. Other solutions are available to deal with the recent push back by travelers, and the even more intrusive enhanced pat downs.
If you’re worried about radiation dangers to sensitive body parts, Rocky Flats Gear can help. The company sells men’s and women’s radiation blocking underwear priced from $9.11 (get it?) to $37.45.
A special fig leaf fabric will block harmful radiation and keep prying airport security eyes away from the family jewels. Rocky Flats Gear claims that its underwear will protect against damage to DNA from radiation exposure.
According to the company’s web site, “Rocky Flats Gear is the US manufacture of a revolutionary flexible, attractive, lightweight, lead free, radiation shielding garments for individuals. Our emphasis is on protecting the traveling public, airline, medical, and security professionals from radiation generated by security and medical imaging equipment. Our novel products can protect tissues from a broadband of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation generated by imaging equipment and natural sources. For the first time, radiological shields are attractive, durable, affordable, fun, and comfortable to wear.”
But as they say on late night television, there’s more.
A competitor, Flying Pasties sells reusable body inserts for breast and crotch areas that also block TSA Peeping Toms, and the radiation produced by full body scanners. Their products are endorsed by Wendy Williams, and other celebrities.
Their web site makes claims similar to Rocky Flat Gear, stating, “Flying Pasties are NOT your typical ‘Pasty’ or ‘sticker’, they are reusable, and can obscure your private areas when you pass through airport scanners. No adhesive necessary as they simply slip into your clothing! Our first generation Flying Pasties work in Millimeter Wave Airport Scanners, and are currently on sale. Our second generation Pasties work in ALL scanners, keeping your private parts private and blocking harmful radiation to your most sensitive areas.”
First generation Flying Pasties cost from $3.99 to $4.99. For maximum protection they suggest using their second generation Flying Pasties, which according to the vendor, “Has five layers of protection and work in both Millimeter Wave and Backscatter Airport Full Body Scanners.” Prices range from $24.99 to $29.99.
However, buyers should use caution. There is no indication that these products are acceptable for use by airport security, or if they will block imaging and lead to further screenings or secondary inspections. The larger issue is why such devices should be necessary at all.
