Police in Oakland, California have fatally gunned down a fierce teenager after he ran away from a collided vehicle.
Oakland police say that he was driving en route to target rival gang members.
Police say that there were three other people who were inside the vehicle. One of those three was captured at the location and was, then, taken into police custody, but was released later on. As for the other two suspects, they fled after the wreck, which followed a short highway pursuit. The crash occurred in East Oakland Monday.
The teen that was fatally gunned down by two Oakland police officers has been identified as 19-year-old Obataiye Edwards of Oakland. Edwards was the one who wielded a gun at the officers, leading them to shoot him, according to authorities. Reportedly, he was also a member of a fierce West Oakland gang.
Cops say that the vehicle that the suspects occupied was a Lincoln sedan, and when police looked into the trunk of the car, they discovered a loaded SKS-style assault rifle.
Police say that the hot pursuit started at approximately 1:30pm Monday after cops received a report regarding four affiliates of a faction, known as the “PT Gang,” who have made arrangements on targeting associates belonging to the rival gang, known as “Acorn.”
Cops say that the suspect vehicle was observed by officers as it was on Interstate 580, in close proximity to the 35th Avenue exit. That was when the hot police pursuit began. Even other patrol officers in the area were notified of the pursuit. As the vehicle exited the freeway, it collided into a house located on 13th Avenue and East 33rd Street. Then, the four people exited the car and ran off in various directions, according to authorities.
However, one of those people, Edwards, was still at the scene confronted by the officers. Edwards, then, pointed a .380-caliber pistol at them, which was actually loaded. But before he could pull the trigger, the officers, sensing imminent danger, fired at him, according to cops. The other suspect was also caught and arrested at the scene, while the remaining two suspects got away.
Police have retrieved the weapon from the location of the shooting.
Authorities could not specify as to the actual number of gunshots fired by the officers or where Edwards was shot at.
It has been almost a year since associates of the police gang task force had probed the PT gang, according to cops, who then mentioned that the gang consists of so many gang members who are 15 to 25 years of age. The gang has been liable for over twelve killings.
Police say that the two rival gangs have been liable for “gunfire incidents on a weekly basis.”
According to cops, the identity of the other arrested suspect has not been disclosed, due to his age. But after they learned that he was not a suspect, they had to let him go.
The officers responsible for opening fire at Edwards have been placed on leave pending an investigation by the police department and the district attorney.
As police officials have disclosed information about the incident, they have somehow requested the general public to prevent or put an end to this type of violence. In other words, they have suggested that the general public should assemble and dissuade these youngsters from engaging in such acts. In short, police are requesting intervention programs for violence prevention.
