Friday, Wanda Barzee testified against her estranged husband, Brian David Mitchell in the kidnapping trial of Elizabeth Smart in Salt Lake City, Utah; Barzee has already been convicted of participating in Elizabeth Smart’s kidnapping.
Barzee, 64, said that her estranged husband manipulated her into doing things and said that his orders were divine law.
“I was told that no matter how difficult I found the load to bear, I needed to follow the law or suffer eternal consequences,” said Wanda Barzee.
“I was told that we were commanded to take 14-year-old young women and we were to snatch them out of the world and train them up in the ministries of God,” said Barzee.
Barzee is serving a 15-year sentence for her role in the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping. She has already severed 7 years of that sentence. She agreed to testify against Mitchell as part of her plea deal.
Barzee said that Mitchell used the revelations to cover his drinking and raping Smart.
“He never expressed any remorse about kidnapping Ms. Smart, did he?” Prosecutor Francis Viti asked.
“No,” Wanda Barzee responded.
Barzee explained how she helped Mitchell prepare the camp before he kidnapped Smart from her Salt Lake City bed in 2002. She placed a bucket in Smart’s tent which was to be used as her bathroom, and it was also the tent that Smart would be raped in.
“I was told that I needed to listen to the plan of my husband,” Barzee said. Asked if that meant she “needed to be submissive and obey?”
Barzee responded, “Yes.”
Barzee said that on June 4, 2002, the night Mitchell kidnapped Elizabeth Smart that she fought with him. Barzee said, “I just knew how drastically my life was going to change,” and said that she was “devastated” that he would take the girl by force.
