Each week I endeavor to list new performance art productions opening around the Twin Cities. With such an abundance of companies and venues in the area, keeping track of openings can be a challenge, but I’ll link whatever I can find. Provided descriptions are reprinted from production websites.
Angharad Davies: Work Party
Are we who we pretend to be? Do our words and actions deceive us? Is it possible to share caresses with a coworker and still expect to get ahead? Work Party is a dance-theater performance that features awkward touching, twitchy movement, and forced positivity training. Using the workplace as their setting, this new work from Angharad Davies explores how barely acquainted colleagues cope with maintaining emotional and physical connections to one another. Runs 11/11 and 11/19 at Bryant Lake Bowl.

Blue Phoenix Circus Troupe: Cabaret Zirkus
Let Blue Phoenix transport you back to the sound and feel of the 1930s German cabaret club with Cabaret Zirkus. With our wickedly humorous and talented chanteuse, stunning cast of performers, and oh so provocative acts…you will experience an evening of entertainment you won’t soon forget! Runs 11/12 and 11/13 at Old Arizona.

Freshwater Theatre Company: Fringe Remounts XXL
Freshwater Theatre Company is proud to announce our debut production, the biggest theatre party this side of the Fringe Festival: Fringe Remounts XXL, an evening of back-to back hits from this summer’s Minnesota Fringe Festival!
- Table 12: A Play at a Wedding takes place at “that table” at a Minnesota wedding where the bride and groom stick the crazies they just don’t know what to do with, but have to invite. If you’re seated at Table 12, the Bride and Groom would prefer to avoid you- and for good reason. Your waiter will be by with drinks, food…and restraining orders!
- An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein features Lacey Piotter and John T. Zeiler, two actors brave enough to take you through the darkly comic adult world of Shel Silverstein, where nothing is as it seems and the most innocent conversation can turn menacing in an instant! A bag lady in training? 60 words for “boobs”? Auctioning a woman at her own request? A dead pony for a birthday present? The punishment for not reading the fine print? Come see the smash hit of the Fringe that so completely sold out the Rarig Xperimental Theater you couldn’t even pre-order tickets to get in!
Fringe Remounts XXL runs at Minneapolis Theatre Garage through 11/21.

Lionel Popkin: There is an Elephant in This Dance
Vividly imagined and adroitly executed, There is an Elephant in This Dance abounds with choreographic eloquence, clever direction and thematic layering. By turns funny, uncanny and disquieting, the work plays off an overlarge elephant costume to suggest how an individual body can hold multiple histories and align itself with divergent cultural identities. Runs 11/12 and 11/13 at the Southern Theater.

The lives of the only two Asian Americans in the tiny town of Breakneck, Wyoming, are turned upside down when the beautiful Veronica Lee, a Korean American teacher from New York City, moves to town. Cowboy Versus Samurai is a romantic comedy that re-imagines the Cyrano de Bergerac story in which the “nose” is race. This production features actors John Catron, Sun Mee Chomet (Macbeth), Kurt Kwan (Mu’s production of Yellow Face) and Sherwin Resurreccion (M. Butterfly). Runs at the Guthrie Theaterthrough 11/28.

Workhaus Collective: Chimera
Welcome to the world of Jennifer Samuels, who has just discovered that she is her own twin. Inspired by a real-life horror story, Chimera takes you on a journey from the frontiers of modern science to the seeds of ancient mythology as co-creators Deborah Stein and Suli Holum explore what happens when technology shatters our ideas of who we think we are. Runs at the Playwrights’ Center Waring Jones Theatre through 11/21.
