OleOleOlson on Alternet broke the story the other day about a Right Wing conspiracy on Social news leader Digg to censor Liberal or Progressive stories. The story indicates that several of those engaged in censoring by hitting the bury button on Digg wrote for the Examiner.
The group utilized a Yahoo Group and a server called coRanks and directed its nearly 100 members to Digg or Bury a story and called several times a day with a list of stories to kill. The accused leader of the group with the username of Bettverbotten is still on Digg with more than 1,500 submissions and 73,000 Diggs.
The alleged result of this activity was the killing and removal from Digg of thousands of stories. It should be noted that this censorship is not just of political writing this group has buried articles about education, homophobia, racism, science, the environment, economics, wealth disparity, green energy, The GOP/Tea Party and Fox News. They would also attack left leaning users trying to goad them into verbal arguements to get them kicked off of Digg.
I remember reading about Right Wing orchestrated attempts to discredit Left leaning bloggers like my Philadelphia Progressive Examiner by orcestrating a barrage of negative comments on the blog in question. I have to admit I found that tactic entertaining and would personally pick titles in hopes of provoking the Right. If this is proven true there is nothing amusing about censoring someone’s right to Free Speech for your cheap political ends and the fact that it may involve fellow bloggers from Examiner is disgusting if eventually proven true.
Dan Kenitz notes that the Digg Patriots have been successful over 90% of the time in killing and burying left leaning articles on Digg and keeping them off the Digg front page news. They have been able to do this within 1 to 3 hours of a submission. They are able to wield this power because of creating multiple accounts to cast multiple down votes by the same person. It is Kenitz and Olson who both allege that the members of this group contain writers and bloggers including a number who write like I do for the Examiner. I would certainly be interested in this part of the so called conspiracy and whether they would try to kill fellow Examiners stories when they could. Kurt Hoffman is another known blogger from this group. He has been responsible for attempts to get Progressive Digg readers banned from the site by instigating petty disputes.
You can juxtapose the Digg Patriots with the phony attempts to create a scandal from Ezra Klein’s Journolist. This fiction was created by Tucker Carlson recently of pretending to be Keith Olbermann fame. Carlson was offended that Liberals talk to each other on a known Liberal blog. One could well wonder what was such a startling revelation that people who write for the Nation, Mother Jones, and the American Prospect are all Progressive and that they talk to each other but Carlson and Andrew Breitbart tried their best to trump up some controversy. That was a fiction the Digg controversy is not.
Zack Carter on his blog noted that the recent upsurge in apparent racist, homophobic comments by people with names that sound like opponents of the Digg Patriots may actually be an attempt to bait and switch by pretending that Liberals do the same thing which I have no doubt is probably true. That said it hardly distracts one from wanting this group of Free Speech violating zealots exposed and completely discredited. Even more so if some of them write for Examiner and were busy burying articles by fellow Examiners because they are too ideologically brain dead to handle normal differences of ideas and opinions. We all have a right to be heard even the Digg Patriots.
