All the Fry’s locations in Los Angeles have the Western Digital WD TV Live Plus Media Player on sale for $99. Not only is this one of the best gadget buys of the season, but it means that you can play all your video content from your computer, portable hard drive, YouTube and Netflix directly on your television set in full 1080p HD.
If you are like me, you download movies and television shows in HD format and save them to a hard drive—this is more convenient than having a bunch of DVD or Bluray discs all over the place. Then, you connect your laptop to your television set through the HDMI port. However, due to memory constraints, you can’t use your laptop while watching movies. This isn’t the case anymore.
I transferred all my video materials to a 500 GB Seagate portable drive and connected it to the Western Digital WD TV Live Plus Media Player, which was then connected to my Vizio HD television set. My HD Media player not only recognized all the video formats (including MPEG, XviD, MP4, WMV), but played them very well.
The Western Digital WD TV Live Plus Media Player doesn’t have WiFi built in, but you can easily connect it to a wireless router. However, this process is highly unnecessary—portable hard drives are extremely cheap and fast. This device will definitely change how you watch television.
