Record breaking NFL quarterback and alleged family man, Brett Favre performed his most notable and foolish boner to date. He was caught and penalized for an inappropriate forward motion and illegal use of hands. This is unacceptable behavior for any man, but adulterous for a married father of two and grandfather of one.
It was exactly one year ago, late on Thanksgiving night in 2009, police responded to a call to Tiger Woods’ neighborhood, where Woods smashed his car into a neighbor’s tree. Woods appeared to have facial lacerations, and the rear window of his SUV was broken out. Moreover, Woods’ wife, Elin Nordegren, was reported to be carrying a golf club, which she purportedly used to removed the back window of the vehicle, hoping to free Woods from the car? This odd set of events led to widespread speculation that Elin Woods had chased her husband out of the house with a golf club, striking Tiger and his car with the club.
This bizarre spin was denied by Woods, but rumors began to circulate of Tiger Woods’ infidelity. Reports accumulated day after day throughout December 2009. Eventually, a list of alleged lovers grew beyond a dozen, and he was forced to announce he would take a break from his golfing career to encounter sex addiction rehab and spend more time with his family. Unable and possibly unwilling to forgive and forget, Mr. and Mrs. Woods agreed to divorce, with Elin Nordegren receiving upwards of $100,000,000 in the divorce settlement. They share custody of their two children.
Oh, how the mighty have fallen. I don’t believe when Tiger Woods was busy secretly arranging his many alleged extra-marital affairs, that he had any idea of the ramifications of his indiscretions. The weight from the hammer, that hasn’t yet, completely finished falling, could possibly prove more than he’s able to bear. What could Mr. Woods have possibly been thinking? Dare we say the same for the 19 year NFL veteran, Brett Favre? It’s obvious that these two athletically gifted men were thinking with something else.
Huffington Post contributor, Donna Estes Antebi wrote it best, …Minnesota Viking’s quarterback got exposed for sexting and texting lewd photographs and salacious messages to a sports reporter. Kudos to Jenn Sterger for having the decency not to take Brett Farve’s dangled bait. Why is it so difficult for men to understand the connection between actions and consequences?
The Bible’s take on fidelity is quite clear. Drink water from your own well, share your love only with your wife. Why spill the water of your springs in the streets, having sex with just anyone? You should reserve it for yourselves. Never share it with strangers. Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your youth… For the Lord sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes. An evil man is held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him. He will die for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his great foolishness. Proverbs 5:15-23
Usually, behavior like this is primarily attributed to how a child is raised. Importance of priorities in one’s childhood can determine character later in life. Most reputable sources say, a child’s mind is most impressionable between the ages of two and five. As parents, we are given an incredible responsibility to guard our children from the negative effects that they may encounter due to choices, good or bad, that have been made. Shouldn’t all children be raised to treat others the way that they would want to be treated? Luke 6:31 reads, “Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.”.
But, just like each of our children are different, so is the difference in the effect that parental instruction and discipline have on each child. I am certainly no expert, but who is? There are thousands, upon thousands of writers, just like myself, putting their expertise into countless articles, and some of those articles are expert advice and can be taken as such. But, with parenting, this expert thing cannot hold true. Each child is succintly different, and like the snowflake, no two alike. Our children have different personalities and therefore need different parenting techniques. God is fantastic like that He has given each and every one of us, an individuality, a unique mathematical equation or arrangement of DNA, so that none of us will ever turn out alike.
Why is it that when boys grow up to be men, and they get to a certain age they feel the need to prove themselves. If it’s not a new car or a new hairpiece, it’s an affair, either of the heart or an actual physical relationship. At 35, Tiger Woods seems to be a little young for a mid-life crisis, but as a childhood prodigy, he began to play golf at the age of two. This thrust, into an amateur career might have stunted and skewed his relationship values.
Brett Favre on the other hand has not been a stranger to misbehavior but, he has an incredible support system through his wife, Deanna. In the early to mid 90’s Favre was dealing with an addiction to Vicodin. Favre, with Deanna at his side, publicly announced his addiction on May 14, 1996. Following his recovery, he credited Deanna as the reason he overcame the addiction. A trustworthy insider claimed that in 1999, the couple became estranged over Brett Favre’s drinking problem. She packed his bags and had them sitting in the courtyard, and told him I’m done. She called Brett’s agent, and told him to come pick up Brett or she was going to call 911. After the incident, he entered rehab for a second time and reportedly has not had a drink since.”
According to Paula Duffy, National Sports Examiner for foamcage.com, Deanna was interviewed on October 21, at ABC’s Good Morning America as well as Fox & Friends, and in concert with the theme of the new book, The Cure for the Chronic Life, Overcoming the Hopelessness That Holds You Back , she fell back on the subject of faith to explain how she is managing the rough waters.
I’m handling this through faith, Robin, she told GMA host Robin Roberts. We were talking earlier about a verse that I have on my fridge: Isaiah 41:9-13, actually, is on my fridge right now. ‘Don’t be afraid. I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.’ And that’s what I’m leaning on.
It was March 2008, that TNT announced that they had ordered a pilot based on a script written by Ray Romano and Mike Royce. Both men had previously worked together on Everybody Loves Raymond. That tells you there should be some great relational scenarios to look forward to. According to TNT, the new season shouldn’t disappoint. Men of a Certain Age premiered on TNT on December 7th, 2009 and returns for a second season on December 6th, at 10/9c. An hour long comedy-drama television series starring Ray Romano, Scott Bakula, and Andre Braugher as three best friends in their late forties dealing with the realities of middle age. TNT promotes the show with the best parts of life are in the middle. .
Not recommended for children, it was given a TV-MA-L rating due to strong language. Men Of A Certain Age is quite a bit edgier than the wholesome Everybody Loves Raymond but shows life and relationships from a more realistic lens angle. The pilot garnered 5.43 million viewers and with the last episode airing on January 4, 2010 with 3.096 million viewers. This prompted Atlanta based execs to offer Men… a second season.
“As the second act in Ray Romano’s TV career, Men of a Certain Age is the opposite of a mid-life crisis: It’s a mid-life triumph!”, says Ken Tucker, a critic-at-large for EW. Depending, of course, on a successful second season. However, the character that Ray Romano plays is less triumphment, but aren’t we all. We all can measure our success in life to the choices we have or haven’t made.
In the summer of 2009, Romano chose to star in the second season of The Golf Channel’s original series The Haney Project, where Tiger Woods’ coach Hank Haney attempts to improve the golf games of different celebrities and athletes. Possibly, after learning a few tips from Tiger’s coach, Tiger Woods could learn a few fidelity tips from Ray Romano.
As far as record holder, Brett Favre is concerned, everyone loves a great comeback.
