In the old days, sugar was expensive and hard to come by and it was a real treat to have some – birthday cakes, holiday candies. Maybe you had sugar snack once a week.
But these days virtually every product on the supermarket shelf for kids has some kind of sweetener in it. From peanut butter to jelly, to cereal to fruit slices in “heavy syrup” or “light syrup,” yogurt, low-fat this and that, hidden sweeteners and sugars are in just about everything you eat and it may be making you and your children sick.
Too much sugar has been linked to heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
Danimals Kids Yogurt – “Sugarmals?” Candy in a Cup
Yogurt, got to be a kids snack that’s healthy, right? Well, there are 14 grams of sugar in 3.1 ounces of Danimals Strawberry Explosion. If you figure about 4 grams of sugar per teaspoon, That’s about 1 teaspoon per ounce.
Staying away from dairy? Trying almond milk or soy milk? Don’t be fooled into buying “Original,” which, unlike original almonds, has sugar in it. You have to buy “unsweetened almond milk” to get almond milk without sugar.
And if doesn’t say “unsweetened” on the front, it probably isn’t.
Smuckers Uncrustables. Big sugarables?
Those Uncrustables are delicious, let me say it, but so is bacon fat and Ring Dings. So delicious, so full of sugar. About 2 teaspoons in a 2 oz sandwich. (I won’t even mention the mono- and diglycerides and calcium peroxide and azodicarbonamide (which is banned in Australia and Europe.) Ooops).
What You Can Do
Read the ingredient list closely, that’s the only place the manufacturers must tell you what’s in the product.
And I’ll tell you what, try cutting out some sugar and you might find you’re tasting food again – and that the sweet stuff is too sweet to even eat.
I used to love kit kats and snickers and all the like, but either my taste has changed or they are making this stuff sweeter, because all I taste is sweet.
Now, of course the manufacturers will say “this is what our customers want.” And they are absolutely right. So start buying lower sugar product and you will see more of it at the stores.
The consumer is King, and Queen.
