Tyler’s Taproom in Durham is one of my favorite places for craft beer. My very first craft beer (a Terrapin Rye) was at Tyler’s and some of my favorite people still work at Tyler’s. The one thing that makes Tyler’s a bit more special than any other beer bar in Durham is not that they have something like 60 taps, but that both the servers and the bartenders are educated about beer. It’s hard to find a bar that you can talk to your server AND the bartender about finding a beer you might like. Over the years the management at Tyler’s has made it a point to have classes for the servers and bartenders to learn about the different styles of beer and what they pair well with. Recently, Tyler’s has even had classes to teach the general public about the various types of beer and how to distinguish them. if you want to take a class, check their website to find out the upcoming class schedule.
Every Wednesday Tyler’s Taproom of Durham has a special pint night where customers can come in and get a special pint of beer, usually tapped for the event, and keep the glass it comes in. Most of my glassware comes from Tyler’s and these events. You can follow Tyler’s Taproom on Twitter to find out their pint night specials. Unlike some other restaurants around town, Tyler’s Pint Night is indeed a full pint and the glass. Some places will pour a short pint or half pint even, but Tyler’s is going to give you a full pint of beer for your money.
Then, there’s the location of Tyler’s. Located in the heart of the American Tobacco Campus in Downtown Durham, Tyler’s is convenient for the new Durham Bulls Stadium and the DPAC. (Did you know you can get your parking validated at Tyler’s? Tell your server when you are ordering that you have a parking stub!) In the spring and summer, Tyler’s is also the place to hang out for the free concerts that go on in the American Tobacco Campus. They serve your standard bar food including hamburgers, BBQ, and fish & chips as well some fantastic appetizers like nachos (with meat or veggie chili) as well as hummus and vegetables.
If you go into Tyler’s as a Budweiser drinker, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Tyler’s doesn’t carry any Budweiser brand products which includes their full line and the ever popular, Heineken. However, it seems that anyone in Tyler’s could help you find something to drink instead. And if you’re not a beer drinker, there’s still a full bar and a good selection of wines available behind the bar.
