Justin Bieber is an artist turned phenomenon. He sells millions of records internationally, instantly sells out stadiums, and sends Internet search engines constantly cranking to find content containing his name. Bieber is undeniably an artist of this digital generation, having launched his career on YouTube and currently having over 6 million followers on Twitter. At 16, fans nominated him for the 2010 American Music Award for Artist of the Year, which will be given to one of the nominees at the live award ceremony later tonight in Los Angeles.
Bieber’s youthful, wholesome image is reminiscent of a young Donny Osmond or Michael Jackson at the beginning of their careers. All of them have/had boyish good looks, a lot of charisma and impressive raw talent. All of their home-grown acts exploded into music sensations with the marketing prowess and polish of some music industry giants. They all became ‘Teen Idols’ to millions of screaming girls around the globe.
Since the release of Bieber’s first single, ‘One Time’ in 2009, which peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100–, all of his singles have enjoyed International chart success. His first album, ‘My World’ certified Platinum in the US and Canada and Silver in the UK. The second half of the album, ‘My World 2.0’ was released in March 2010 and the lead single ‘Baby’, (released January 2010) charted at number 5 in the US and reached the top ten in seven other countries. ‘My World 2.0’ also certified Platinum.
His highly anticipated holiday release, ‘My World Acoustic’ hits stores this week on Black Friday, November 26th.
Bieber has already won several awards in 2010, including:
- TRL Award for Best International Act
- Young Hollywood Award for Newcomer of the Year
- Teen Choice Award Male Artist
- Teen Choice Award Breakout Artist Male
- Teen Choice Award Summer Music Star Male
- Teen Choice Award Pop Album- ‘My World 2.0’
Even his mother, Pattie Mallette, is amazed at the things her son has done. She told the NY Times, ‘The baby I diapered has played Madison Square Garden and sung for the president of the United States. It’s crazy.’
In lieu of his wild popularity, it is understandable that the voting public has graced Bieber with 4 2010 American Music Award nominations. They are:
- Pop/Rock – Favorite Male Artist
- Pop/Rock – Favorite Album ‘My World 2.0’
- T-Mobile Breakthrough Artist of the Year
- (And the coveted) Artist of the Year
With all Bieber’s achieved in such a short period of time, he just may take the cake and win in all 4 American Music Award categories, with Artist of the Year as the frosting.
