Every fashionista needs a good purse: one that is sturdy, stylish, convenient and wearable. Zansus Purses adds one more category to the list: eco-chic work of art.
Sushanta Bhandarkar and Naz Saeed are the power duo behind Zansus Purses, a line of hand-crafted purses, totes and clutches made from up-cycled materials- items rescued prior to being thrown away. But the materials are far from scrap-worthy. The designers use durable fabrics from drapery, upholstery and other design workshops, that are beautifully ornamented, and made to be long-lasting, stain resistant, and even fire resistant.
Zansus bags are perfect for style-minded women, and men, who use accessories as outlets of self expression. The designs are chic and are quite literally unique— each bag is a hand made, one-of-a-kind, not made for mass production. The best part? Zansus bag production is actually good for the environment.
“Our design concept is really simple,” note the designers. “It’s a pure rescue, re-use, re-purpose, re-cycle, re-think effort.” Zansus was established with the “Cradle to Cradle” philosophy in mind, meaning that nothing gets wasted, and all materials used are given a new life. “We try to incorporate even the smallest of pieces in creative ways and minimize our waste. For example, we use smaller pieces as tags inside our bags! If the fabric is not aesthetically suitable we use it on the inside as a stabilizer for the flap or the body of the purse.” Materials that don’t get used are donated to organizations such as Resource Area for Teaching–RAFT– or ScrapSF which utilize remnants for art and educational programs.
According to Sushanta and Naz, the Zansus aesthetic is “eco-modern … inspired by nature, fashion, people, architecture, food, art, drama.” Perhaps most importantly, the designers are inspired by the materials they are given. “Once everything is in front of us we use principles of art, our interior design backgrounds, and our own personal styles to make these artistic up-cycled creations.”
While there’s a Zansus bag to suit every arm (view the slideshow to sneak a peak at their offerings!), there are a few standout collections. Designs you must try?
- The Pursangle: Half purse, half bangle, Pursangles are hands-free bags, great for daytime outings, or nights on the town. While they look small, they’re the perfect size for carrying the essentials, like lipstick, keys, cell phone, cash and cards. The bag hangs from your wrist, leaving your pretty little hands unencumbered.
- The Clutch: Zansus clutches are sleek and sexy, and add an elegant touch to any outfit. There’s a clutch for every woman in the collection, whether the look is casual chic or sultry sophistication.
- The Tote: This season, totes are in with a vengeance. Keep up to date with one of Naz and Sushanta’s colorful creations. They’re perfectly cute for Saturday shopping trips and Sunday brunches.
